Multimedia Producer, Duluth News Tribune

My name is Samantha Erkkila and I am the multimedia producer at the Duluth news tribune it's our daily newspaper here in Duluth. But my role is essentially the same as a reporter I'm going out on news stories, news events, breaking news and I'm capturing video I'm interviewing people getting the story and coming back and editing it in a way that is easy for people to digest and watch. Social media is also a part of my job so getting the news out to people in a way that they understand on multitude of platforms. A typical day for me is, I get in the office and I look at our website and make sure everything looks well all our stories are up there. I schedule our things for social media accounts so when breaking news does happen I'm able to just run out the door grab my camera tripod and just get out of there. I have everything packed up and ready to go when I need to go and then you're out there for as long as you need to. You talk to as many people as you can you get as much footage as you can and you come back and you edit it as quickly as you can so you can get it up fast and accurate before your competitors. Sometimes I will call the people there and kind of get a better idea of what the space is like what the event all entails so that I know if I need to bring a GoPro or a drone or different types of equipment. So that's a main thing and then I also try and do a little pre-interview so I know again as much information as I can going into it. Figure out who I need to talk to right when I get there I do my interviews first for the most part if I can if it's not breaking news, and then I get the footage that I need.
